Understanding the Alkaline Diet: What It Is and Why It Matters

In recent years, the alkaline diet has gained popularity among those seeking to improve their health and well-being. But what exactly is an alkaline diet, and why should you consider it? In this post, we’ll break down the basics of the alkaline diet, explore why it might be beneficial, and provide a list of the top 20 alkaline foods to include in your diet.

What Does Alkaline Mean?

The term "alkaline" refers to the pH level of a substance. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Anything with a pH level below 7 is considered acidic, while anything above 7 is alkaline (or basic). Our bodies naturally maintain a slightly alkaline pH level in the blood, around 7.35 to 7.45, which is crucial for many bodily functions.

What Is Acidic?

Acidic foods and substances have a pH level below 7. Common acidic foods include meat, dairy, processed foods, alcohol, and caffeine. When consumed in excess, these foods can contribute to an acidic environment in the body, potentially leading to various health issues.

Why Should I Have an Alkaline Diet?

Proponents of the alkaline diet believe that eating more alkaline-forming foods can help maintain a healthy pH balance in the body, reducing acidity. An acidic environment in the body is thought to contribute to various health problems, including inflammation, decreased bone density, and a weakened immune system. By focusing on alkaline foods, you may support your body’s natural processes, promote better health, and even improve energy levels and digestion.

Alkaline Chocolate Coconut Bliss Balls with Chocolate Coating

Ingredients:

For the Bliss Balls:

  • 1 cup medjool dates (pitted)

  • 1/2 cup raw almonds

  • 2 tablespoons raw cacao powder (alkaline-forming)

  • 2 tablespoons almond butter or tahini

  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • A pinch of sea salt

  • 1/4 cup shredded unsweetened coconut (plus extra for rolling)

  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds (optional)

For the Chocolate Coating:

  • 1/4 cup raw cacao powder

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil (melted)

  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup or raw honey

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Bliss Balls:

    • If the dates are slightly dry, soak them in warm water for 10 minutes to soften, then drain well.

    • In a food processor, pulse the raw almonds until finely chopped but still with some texture.

    • Add the dates, cacao powder, almond butter or tahini, coconut oil, vanilla extract, and sea salt to the food processor.

    • Blend until the mixture becomes sticky and well combined. If using, add the chia seeds and shredded coconut, and pulse a few more times until evenly distributed.

    • Scoop out small portions of the mixture and roll them into balls, about the size of a large marble. Set aside on a lined tray.

  2. Prepare the Chocolate Coating:

    • In a small bowl, whisk together the raw cacao powder, melted coconut oil, and maple syrup or honey until smooth and glossy.

    • If the mixture is too thick, add a little more melted coconut oil. If it's too thin, add a bit more cacao powder.

  3. Coat the Bliss Balls:

    • Using a fork or a skewer, dip each bliss ball into the chocolate coating, ensuring it's fully covered.

    • Allow any excess chocolate to drip off before placing the coated ball back onto the lined tray.

  4. Add Finishing Touches:

    • While the chocolate coating is still wet, sprinkle the balls with extra shredded coconut or a pinch of sea salt for added texture and flavor.

  5. Chill and Set:

    • Place the tray in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or until the chocolate coating has hardened.

    • Once set, the chocolate-coated bliss balls can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.
