My thoughts on superfoods

Hardly a week goes by that a writer, blogger, or marketer doesn’t declare the existence of a “Superfood.” I just saw one today. By "Superfood," the reference is to a food that is superior to other foods typically for its nutrient contents.

From my perspective, a food is either health supporting or it is not. You get the drift. No more, no less. I don't know about you, but I don't want my body to do anything but function properly. In fact, I love wild Salmon, but I would never call it a Super-food (because it's not--it's just a healthy source of protein, fatty acids, etc.).

The problem with calling things “superfoods”, the risk is people thinking that they can balance unhealthy foods with such super-foods. Why work on changing your habits when you can just add goji berries or an acai bowl to your diet?…

I think the thing that bothers me the most though, is nominating some foods as nutritionally superior gives the impression that ordinary, affordable, and everyday ingredients are somehow deficient.

I’ll stick with my everyday fruit and vegies thanks, and of course my apple a day.
