Apple and cinnamon overnight oats

It's apple season, folks, and there's no better time to sink your teeth into this quintessential Autumn/fall fruit. Whether you like 'em sweet, tart, or somewhere in between, apples are the perfect snack for any time of day.

But did you know that not all apples are created equal? Some are better for snacking, while others are perfect for baking or making into cider. Here are some of the most popular apple varieties and what you should do with them:

  1. Honeycrisp: This apple is a crowd-pleaser, with its perfect balance of sweetness and tartness. It's great for snacking, but also holds up well when baked or cooked. Try using it in pies, crisps, or even roasted alongside pork or chicken.

  2. Granny Smith: This apple is the go-to for all things tart. Its firm texture makes it perfect for baking into pies, tarts, and cakes. But don't let its tartness fool you – it's still great for snacking, especially when paired with a sharp cheddar cheese.

  3. Gala: If you're looking for a sweet apple that's great for snacking, Gala is your best bet. It's also a great choice for making applesauce, as it breaks down easily when cooked.

  4. Red Delicious: This classic apple is a bit controversial – some people love its sweet flavor and crunchy texture, while others find it bland and mealy. While it's not the best for baking, it's a great snack when you're on the go.

  5. Jazz Apples are great for snacking on their own, but also hold up well when cooked or baked. Their sweet-tart flavor makes them a great addition to salads, and they're also delicious when paired with sharp cheeses or nuts. In addition to their great taste, Jazz apples are also known for their health benefits. Like most apples, they're a good source of fiber and vitamin C, and also contain antioxidants that can help protect against disease.

Here is my recipe for Apple and Cinnamon overnight oats

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk (or milk of your choice)

  • 1/2 cup chopped apple (peeled or unpeeled, depending on your preference)

  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup (or honey)

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. In a jar or container with a lid, combine the rolled oats, almond milk, chopped apple, maple syrup, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir to combine.

  2. Cover the jar or container with a lid and refrigerate overnight (or for at least 4 hours).

  3. In the morning, give the oats a stir and add a splash of additional almond milk if needed to reach your desired consistency. Enjoy cold, or microwave for 30-60 seconds if you prefer your oats warm.

Optional toppings:

  • Chopped nuts (such as almonds or pecans)

  • Dried cranberries or raisins

  • Additional chopped apple

  • Drizzle of honey or maple syrup

  • Crunchy granola

This recipe makes one serving, so feel free to double or triple it if you want to make multiple servings at once. Enjoy!
